Thassos at a glance
Thassos the so called emerald island is located in the northern Aegean sea approximately 7 km from the northern mainland and 20 km south-east of Kavala, is of generally rounded shape, without deep bays or significant peninsulas. Away from the coast, the terrain is is mountainous , but not particularly rugged, rising gradually from coast to center , creating a stunning scenery with picturesque villages , forested mountain peaks, valleys of olives groves and pastures of happily grazing goats and sheep. It is a place of fascinating beauty . The fresh, floral air energizes you. The warm, tranquil waters refresh you. It warmly invites you to explore the island and discover an ideal travel experience .
Although the beach holiday season gets going in May and winds down in October, the island is beautiful even in the early spring time when you can celebrate the Orthodox Easter and late October when you can witness – or take part in – the olive grove harvest .. The island has a main road around the island of about 100 km while smaller roads lead to the villages in the interior part of the island. Most of the beaches around the island are ease to reach .. For those who are interested about it΄s rich ancient history will be excited mainly by the antiquities in the capital of the island called Limenas where you can visit the ancient theatre, the ancient market and the Archaeological Museum all located close to the old part of the town , nearby the old harbour.
You’ll find that the culture of Thassos is very family friendly. Build sand castles with your kids on the islands’ beautiful beaches which are mainly sandy with shallow water , experience scuba diving, or horse riding . Take a boat trip around the island , discover hidden coves , ancient quarries and plunge into the turquoise sea. Late in the evening the colorful sunsets will seduce you .
The island is well known for it΄s famous white marble (the marble quarries are mainly on the northeast part of the island ) and it΄s exceptional pine honey and olive products . Taste the local cuisine whether you prefer the unpretentious tavernas in the mountain villages who offer a variety of lamb or goat dishes or the fish tavernas down the seaside where you can enjoy fresh fish.
How to reach the island
It is the easiest thing to reach this magnificent island . From the airport of Great Alexander near Kavala take the road to the port of keramoti , embark the ferry that leaves every 40 minutes and disembark at the port of Limenas at Thassos or from the port from Kavala take the ferry to Limenaria , another port of the island , in a different direction.
